Being the capital during the British rule of the country, Georgetown, quite expectedly, has many cultural sites in the form of buildings, monuments, churches, gardens and tree-lined streets. Only some of these will be described here.

Walter Rodney Museum
This elegant wooden building is located on Main Street and is within walking distance from downtown Georgetown.

Red House
Red House, so called because of the distinctive red wallaba shingles that protect the imported Pitch Pine softwood underneath, is located on High Street in Kingston. Built in the 19 th century, it served as t he home of former Colonial Secretaries. In the 20 th century, the PPP utilized it as their press headquarters.

 Umana Yana
This thatched building is in honour of the Wai Wais, one of the Amerindians tribes of the country. It is located very close to Le Meridian Pegasus (Forte Crest), not far from the seawall, along High Street, Kingston.

Castellani House
Castellani House is an impressive wooden structure, designed by architect Cesar Castellani about 1879-1882. It is located at the corner of Vlissengen Road and Homestretch Avenue adjacent to the Botanical Gardens. It used to be the home of the late Prime Minister of the country, with its most famous resident being the late Prime Minister and first Executive President Forbes Burnham. Succeeding presidents chose not to live there and it was the PPP/Civic administration, which, in May 1993, brought the building back to life by renaming it Castellini House and making it available to house the national Art Collection.

St George’s Cathedral
This building, located on King Street and North Road just on the round-about with Church Street is one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world. It stands a majestic 143 feet (43.58 metres) high. The visitor is also encouraged to visit many other fine pieces of architecture including City Hall, Parliament buildings, Victoria Law Courts, Sacred Heart’s Church (built for Portuguese immigrants) and St Andrew’s Kirk. Also in Georgetown are Hindu temples and mosques, which attest to the strong faith of the Guyanese Hindu and Muslim communities respectively.
