Bio-data of Deputy Mayor, Mr. Robert Edward Williams, J.P.

Robert Edward Williams is the serving Deputy Mayor of Georgetown, Guyana’s only Capital City. Mr. Williams hails from a small village on the Corentyne Coast of Manchester. He started his education at the Manchester Primary School and the Corentyne High School. Being an ambitious young man, Robert decided to enter the world of work.
He joined the Guyana Police Force, in 1970. With his knowledge and love for his job he was promoted speedily through the ranks to Sergeant, in 1974. Later, that same year, he was voted best all round Policeman.
However, he decided to end his policing career in 1976. The zealous young Robert, looking into the fountain of success, decided to enter into a full time political career with the People’s National Congress under the watchful eye of its Leader, Mr. Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham. He became the Regional Chairman of the People’s National Congress almost immediately.
In 1976, he began moving in the political ranks and became a Minster of Government, 1980. In 1983, he became the Chairman of Guyana Fisheries Limited, and because of his modern style of management, served as Chairman of the Guyana Export Promotion Council in 1985. Also, he served as Mayor of the Capital City from 1986 to 1989.
In 1992, after National Election in Guyana, Robert Williams and some members of the P.N.C. leadership went their different ways. This break off fraction formed its own political Party, which was named the Good and Green Guyana, of which Mr. Williams became the General Secretary and is still serving.
Apart from this, he is interested in Cultural Caribbean music that has inspired him in community participation through groups and at the individual level which he believe will raise the social and cultural aspect of the City development at each level. Mr. Williams is also an advocate of sports for all ages, and serves as the Vice President of the World Council of Domino Federation, and President of the National Domino Federation of Guyana.
