Hamilton Green was born on November 9, 1934, the only son of Wilfred Amelius Green and Edith Ophelia Dorothy Green. His father was a popular Chemist and Druggist, and his mother a beautician and social activist.
He was educated at Saint Stanislaus College and the prestigious Queens College of Guyana then managed by the British Colonial Administration. Here, he was a champion athlete excelling in the sprints and middle distances. Academically, he distinguished himself in English Language, English Literature and History, and has retained a passion in these areas relating world history to contemporary life.
After completing the druggist examination his parents prepared him to migrate to study medicine in the US, however he became actively involved in the independence struggle of the 50’s and never turned back.
He was elected the youngest General Secretary of the People’s National Congress in 1962 at age 28, for twelve continuous years. He has been its longest serving General Secretary, and played a major role in the Party acceding to office in 1964.
In 1974, he demitted this post to concentrate on important ministerial and governmental duties.
He was elected to Parliament in 1968, and became a Minister of the Government in 1969. After holding a number of Ministerial portfolios, he was appointed Vice-President in 1980, First Deputy Prime Minister in 1983, and Prime Minister in 1985 and served in that capacity until Elections of 1992.
In 1993, he broke with the PNC over ideological and philosophical issues, the following year he formed and led the Good and Green Guyana (GGG) party. This was initially established as an environmental group, and also campaigned for a moral and spiritual revival as the panacea for Guyana’s, complex situations, to secure wholesomeness, peace, progress, and the well being of the world.
The GGG contested the Municipal Elections in Georgetown, the nation’s Capital City. The GGG under his leadership secured the highest percentage of votes ahead of both the PNC and the incumbent Government Party the PPP/C.
He was elected Mayor of Georgetown in 1994, re-elected in 1996 and holds that office to date.
He has delivered lectures in his country, in North America and elsewhere on Peace, World Politics, and the need for a moral and spiritual revival. He is the author of the book “From Pain to Peace”, which dealt with Guyana’s political history from 1953 to 1964.
He is a fitness enthusiast, loves both outdoor and indoor games, and music has; studied history and philosophy. He is a strict disciplinarian and believes in striving for excellence at all times.
He led in the formation of the Guyana National Steel Band Association, and is the President of the Dorado Speed Swim Club the champion club in Guyana.
