Mayor's welcome message

Welcome...

Happily, I welcome you to our city’s official webpage. This online site will give you an idea of the many things we have to offer in our city. Here you will find the seat of government, the chief port and the main commercial centres, and markets. We have excellent climatic conditions, and the beautiful Demerara River at our western and Atlantic Ocean on the northern boundaries; a sense of history and culture, with historical monuments and gracious colonial buildings that are still practically utilized today such as the City Hall and St. George’s Cathedral; good shopping for locally made craft; and the friendliest people in the world.

Georgetown is the nation’s capital, with a rich wooden heritage apart from its unique drawings and grid, because the city is below sea level. It is my sincere hope that you find our website educational, useful, and easy to navigate. We are committed to providing easier access to the information and services of the City of Georgetown through the internet. This is a great place to live, work, and play!

In the “Mayor’s Office” link on this site, you can check out my profile, public appearance schedule, read some of my speeches and even make a complaint. While browsing, you can drop me an email message. Remember, your input counts. I am always interested in hearing from fellow citizens and visitors to our Garden City.

The staff of our Information Technology Department has complied the information for your convenience. We will update and add information on a continual basis. My vision is for all departments and divisions to have a presence on the web, and to be on the cutting edge of technology, but not lose the personal touch as we work with and for the citizens and visitors of Georgetown.

After you’ve had a chance to look at us online, won’t you come and visit us? We’d love to take more time to introduce you to this beautiful city with a population of approximately 200,000 and abundance of tree lined avenues and canals and the tallest wooden building in the world, the St Georges Cathedral.

We’re looking forward to your visit and the place where the 1st Caribbean Festival of Art was held in 1971 and the Non Alignment Movement is situated.

Sincerely,

Hamilton Green, J.P.
Mayor, City of Georgetown
